Mortirolo Pass, a challenging Cycling Holyday
Are you an avid cyclist, looking for a challenging Italian bike tour, on the most famous and tough Italian Alp passes?
Road Bike Tours Italy offers the right sfida for you, with our “Great Alps” road bike tour.
One of these passes is the famous Mortirolo Pass ( 1852 m above the sea level ), that in this Italian bike tour, we will climb in two side.
This pass had great importance in both the world wars, and its name comes from the word “morti”( that means died ), for the several people who died there during the first world war.
Theatre of fierce clashes even during the Second World War, between partisans and germans, retreating to Trentino.
Still visible, not far from the pass, the trenches of such fights.
At first we will ride the easiest side, the south side, it’s about 12 Km long, with a difference in altitude of 950 m, just a little starter.
After a few days we will climb the North side, considered one of the most difficult European ascent, with its drop of 1300 m, in 12 Km, with maximum gradient of 18%.
From 3rd to 9th Km the slope never falls below 11%.
The road leading to the pass is not numbered in the kilometers in length, but for almost the entire route you will find wooden signs indicating the various small locations reached and their height at sea level.
Here Pantani in 1994, during a stage of the Giro d’Italia, launched his first major attack by making inroads into the hearts of all cycling fans. Since then it has become a popular destination for lovers of cruel slopes, a must for all climbers.
The “Giro d’Italia” has come the Mortirolo pass for the first time in 1990, and until now for 14 editions.
In 2006, at the Km 8, North side, from Mazzo, a monument was placed in honor of Marco Pantani and to pay homage to Michele Scarponi, the Mortirolo has been renamed, in his memory, Ascent Scarponi.
In our road bike tour “ Great Alps”, we will also ride along the beautiful panoramic road too that starts from the topof Mortirolo pass and leads to Passo Aprica, above the Valtellina, the valley that brings in lake Como… but this is another story.
So, in your next cycling holiday, ride in the history, challenge yourself in one of the icon of cycling !
